Overview
General settings control VAT validation, checkout, and what is stored on the customer and the order.
Open Apps → B2B & Wholesale → Tax & prices → Tax Exempt → Open settings. The page has three tabs: General settings, Text settings and Styling settings. Other languages are on the separate Translations page.
Use draft order logic
When this is on, a successful VAT check creates a draft order and sends the customer there. Leave it off to use Shopify’s standard checkout.
Use draft order logic when prices include VAT. Leave it off when prices exclude VAT. Do not turn it on if the store also uses B2B draft checkout for custom, volume or bulk prices. Those draft flows are not combined yet.
With draft order logic on, these extra options appear:
Show tax exemption notice in checkout on product level — adds a tax-exempt marker on the cart products.
Require VAT validation before checkout — the checkout button stays disabled until the VAT number is valid. This only applies to customers in EU countries.
Custom checkout button selector — advanced. Leave it empty unless the theme checkout button is not detected. Example:
#checkout-button.
What gets saved
Save validated VAT ID as order note — optional prefix, or the number only.
Save VIES company address data to order additional data — company name, street, postal code and city. VIES does not always return a complete address. Missing fields are stored as “not available”.
Add tag to customer after VAT validation — default tag is VAT Validated. You can change the name. This works for new and existing customers.
Advanced cart attribute names default to tax_exempted and vat_number. Change them only if an integration requires different names.
Who sees the form
Hide the form for visitors from the same country as your shop.
Hide the form for visitors from non-EU countries.
VAT rates by country
The country rates on this page are used only when Use draft order logic is on. Leave a country empty to keep the default rate. Northern Ireland is listed as XI.
