What does the app do?

The app allows EU business customers to validate their VAT number directly in the Shopify checkout.
When a VAT number is successfully validated:
VAT exemption is applied immediately
Checkout totals are updated in real time
The order is processed correctly under EU reverse-charge rules
No Draft Orders are used.
Everything happens inside checkout.
Is the app fully VIES and EU compliant?
Is the app fully VIES and EU compliant?
Yes.
VAT numbers are validated using the official EU VIES API
The app follows EU reverse-charge VAT rules
VAT is only exempted for cross-border EU transactions
Domestic VAT numbers are validated but not exempted

You add the app via Checkout UI Extensions.
Go to Settings → Checkout
Click Customize next to your checkout configuration
Add the EU VAT Validation app block
Enable Allow app to block checkout
Save and publish

Placement depends on your checkout layout and product type.
Physical goods
One-page checkout:
Delivery section → Delivery addressThree-page checkout:
Information page → Contact section → Shipping address
Digital or mixed products
Digital-only checkouts do not show shipping fields.
In this case, add a second app block:
One-page checkout:
Payment section → below “Remember me”Three-page checkout:

Where can I find the VAT number entered by my customer?
Where can I find the VAT number entered by my customer?
Depending on your settings, the VAT number can be found in:
Order details
Company location tax details (Shopify B2B)
Company location notes
Order metadata used by the app
You can configure where VAT numbers are stored in General Settings.
VAT isn’t removed from the total price in checkout

Common causes:
The VAT number belongs to the same country as your store
The customer email in checkout does not match the validated email
VAT exemption is disabled for that country
The VAT number is invalid or not VIES-eligible
Only cross-border EU VAT numbers qualify for exemption.
VAT is removed, but the price stays the same at checkout
VAT is removed, but the price stays the same at checkout
This is expected behavior in some pricing setups.
This usually means:
Prices are VAT-exclusive
Or pricing is handled by Shopify Markets or fixed prices
In VAT-exclusive setups:
VAT removal affects tax calculation, not displayed prices
This is not an error.

Digital products do not require shipping information.
To ensure VAT validation is always available:
Add an additional EU VAT Validation app block in checkout
Place it in the Payment or Contact section (depending on layout)
This ensures VAT exemption works for:
Digital-only carts
Mixed digital and physical carts

You can use Shopify Flow to tag VAT-exempt orders automatically.
Typical setup:
Trigger: Order created
Condition: Order is tax-exempt
Action: Add order tag (e.g.
vat-exempt)
